Many spiders of the species Steatoda (Latin: Steatoda grossa) live quietly with pet owners in apartments: eating up all kinds of roaches, moths, fruit flies and other stray insects. They look very similar to the Black Widow and they are its close relatives.
I've got quite a lot of these spiders and I don't hurt them, since I like spiders more than roaming cockroaches.
And then my arm became itchy. By the look of the bite and the sensations, it was exactly the bite of such a Steatode spider.
One of my geckos escaped, so in the middle of the night I went to stir up the bowels under my bed and counters, and apparently that's when the spider bit me. I did not feel or notice anything. The itching began about 12 hours later.
The bite site turned red, swollen and really itchy. But there is no pain.
I wasn't able to find the gecko anyway though.
And greetings to all the arachnophobes from arachnophobe Elena, who is afraid of spiders, but that doesn't stop her from keeping them at home as pets!
