The sparrow owl is the smallest owl in Eurasia. The weight of an adult owl is about 50-80 grams. For comparison, the weight of the Little owl, such as the Luchik and Kutusha, is on average 170-210 grams, and the weight of the scops owls is about 90-100 grams.
With all this smallness, sparrow owls do not fly anywhere for the winter, they live, including in the taiga, quietly winter and tolerate low temperatures.
In captivity, these nano owls live extremely poorly and for a very short time. This is due to the peculiarities of their diet and the need for wintering in "natural" conditions, that is, on the street. Also, due to the rapid metabolism, the owls can rapidly develop a disease, and most often it simply does not work out in time to help the bird.
The sparrow owl who came to us had a broken right wing. He was treated by veterinarian Maria Markina. The wing has grown together, but the owl will no longer fly fully. Sparrow came to us for permanent residence, and now his task is to get used to, get used to and live.
